Chapter – 4

Sex and Low Testosterone

There is no denying the fact that sex is good for you — safe sex, to be precise. While talking about sex, the hormone testosterone needs a special mention. As we have read before that this hormone is primarily responsible for a man’s libido and his performance in bed, it is a crucial factor in discussing sexual activity for men. While testosterone is not the only way to stimulate a man’s sex drive, the lack of it is surely one of the reasons for inability to have satisfying sex. Low levels of testosterone can cause a drop in libido and erectile dysfunction. These can be treated, if the diagnosis is made early.

There is nothing called a ‘normal sex drive’, the reason being that it differs from one man to another and what could be satisfying for one partner could be not-so-stimulating for the other. In other words, the intensity of a man’s sex drive can only be measured by himself and his partner. Scientists are of the opinion that sex drive in men tends to decline over a period of time, with its peak in puberty and a slight drop as he enters his 30s. Along with age, other factors like stress, lack of sleep, lack of opportunities to have sex, and materialistic concerns tend to take away a chunk of a man’s libido.

So how is low testosterone related to these factors? There have been a number of ongoing research studies regarding the relationship between testosterone and the outcomes named above. A few findings have fuelled the hypothesis that low levels of testosterone could actually worsen your sexual problems if they were pre-existing.

In a study, men in Massachusetts who had a low sex drive were tested and the results were that 28% of them had low levels of testosterone. These men were in the age group of 45-47, which is relatively young for sexual problems to arise. While there have been claims that there could be other reasons like lack of sleep, excessive work, and chronic health conditions along with medication, the repeated findings linking low T hormone and low libido cannot be ignored.

Is Testosterone directly linked to sex?

So the question that looms large is whether low testosterone could actually hamper your sexual life without other factors in the loop? Scientifically, this is difficult to prove, because there always need to be other factors taken into consideration. But what is alarming to know, is how the other factors are almost always invariably present along with low T hormone and low sex drive.

Strong and healthy erections are imperative to sexual satisfaction. While there are claims that a diminishing T hormone level could cause erectile dysfunction, it is not the only thing that is responsible. Erectile dysfunction is mainly caused by atherosclerosis, which is in itself caused by a number of things like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Surprisingly, research shows a strong link between low levels of T hormone and these health conditions, including obesity and metabolic disorders.
